Summer is prime vacation time, and you want to take advantage of the sunny skies after spending 18 months at work. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea. That means you need to prepare well in advance to avoid traffic jams, flight delays and other problems that can interfere with your vacation. Discuss travel plans no later than early January, and try to have an itinerary set by March. Pick off-peak flight times to avoid airport crowds.

Travel Tip #2 SHARE THIS TIP

If traveling by car, check traffic detours and weather patterns to lessen hassles. Get your vehicle tuned up and make sure it's ready to drive long distances. Also, prepare an emergency kit with a flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, a jug of water, engine coolant and first aid supplies.

Travel Tip #3 SHARE THIS TIP

Venture off the beaten path whenever possible. You can tour beautiful places for lower prices if you're willing to venture out. Pick a route less traveled on a map and stop when you see interesting landmarks. Ask locals about the area and solicit their advice on where to go and what to do.

Travel Tip #4 SHARE THIS TIP

A good time to beat the crowds is in September. In most places, the weather is as good as it gets all summer, and deals start to open up after Labor Day. In some places October is as warm as September, so if you can delay vacation that long you can find great savings.
